SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT

Summer school and workshop: RAAG Young 2005

Tame Geometry : a Tribute to René Thom and Stanisław Łojasiewicz

Dear Colleague,

During the end of the year 2002, René Thom and Stanisław Łojasiewicz passed away. These two mathematicians left a great legacy to real geometry: their work initiated some of the main issues which led to the development of what is now known as "Tame Geometry". Most striking examples may be the rewriting of subanalytic geometry or the systematic development of transversality and stratification theory for the study of singularities.

The 10-days summer school will offer mini-courses on subjects in which R. Thom and S.Łojasiewicz were involved: stratifications, foliations, geometric theory of analytic functions and gradients of tame functions. The workshop will be devoted to more recent aspects of the questions and problems discussed during the courses.

The workshop will be devoted to more recent aspects of the questions and problems discussed during the courses.

The summer school is particularly dedicated to young researchers of the Network RAAG but young researchers from outside of the network are also warmly welcome.

Courses:

F. Acquistapace & F. Broglia:
Global semi-analytic geometry
Z. Jelonek: Geometry of polynomial mappings
J-M. Lion: o-minimality and theorem of the complement in Pfaffian geometry
M-F. Roy: Methods of critical points and complexity in real algebraic geometry
Z. Szafraniec: Effective methods for computing the topological invariants of real algebraic sets
V. Thilliez: Course on quasi-analytic classes
D. Trotman: Course on stratifications
Y.Yomdin: Course on singularities and image processing
There will  be also a course on gradient trajectories and the proof of Thom's conjecture and a course on differential equations and o-minimal structures.

Talks and afternoon sessions:
A part of the summer school will be devoted to lectures on recent advances in  related topics. Workgroup sessions will also be animated by specialists.

Dates:
The meeting will start on Monday the 6th of June 2005 and end on Saturday June 18th; Saturday afternoon 11th and Sunday 12th will be left free.

Accommodations:
The participants will either stay in student rooms near the conference place (9 euros/night) or in hostel Citea Curial, downtown Chambéry (single room 38 euros/night with breakfast; double room 53 euros/night + 6 euros breakfast).

The student rooms are more particularly recommended for Ph. D or DEA students as they offer less comfort than the rooms in hostel Citea Curial. Moreover, for people who want to cook by themselves, the hostel Citea Curial has rooms (single or double) equipped with a kitchenette. All rooms (the student rooms and the ones in hostel Citea Curial) have bathrooms but the student rooms have no toilets (located in the hall).

Lunches will be available at the university restaurant for approximately 5 euros.

Financial support: We'll try to support (at least partially) living expenses of the participants during the school. Priority will be given to young researchers.

Registration form:
The organizers need to know the number of participants in advance. Please fill and send us back the registration form before 15th of March 2005 at Tame-Geometry2005@univ-savoie.fr.

Best regards,
the organisers.
